Using this website.

We want the Trace & Ledger website to be clear, usable and accessible to as many people as possible.

Our approach

We have designed this website to be straightforward to navigate, readable across different screen sizes and usable with a keyboard as well as a mouse or touch input. We use recognised web accessibility practices as a guide when designing and maintaining the site.

What we have implemented

  • A consistent page structure with one main heading per page and heading levels that follow in order.
  • A "Skip to content" link for keyboard users, so the main content can be reached without tabbing through the navigation on every page.
  • A visible keyboard focus outline on links, buttons and form fields, chosen for strong contrast against the page.
  • A mobile navigation menu that can be opened, closed and moved through using only a keyboard, including the Escape key to close it.
  • Form fields with persistent visible labels, and error messages that are associated with the relevant field and announced to assistive technology.
  • Support for the "reduce motion" setting in your browser or device: where you have asked for less motion, animations and transitions are minimised.
  • A minimum touch and click target size on buttons, links and form controls, intended to make them easier to activate accurately.
  • Decorative icons and images are hidden from assistive technology so they do not add noise when navigating by screen reader.

Known limitations

Photographs on the website are currently treated as decorative, with the surrounding text carrying the meaning, rather than each image carrying its own written description. If a future image conveys information that is not already available in nearby text, we will add a description for it.

We continue to review the site as it develops. Some combinations of browsers, devices or assistive technologies may behave differently, and we may not yet have tested every possible configuration.
